MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY
Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management at a global level.
This year’s theme is “ making menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030”.
Menstruation is a normal part of most girls/women’s life. Women are faced with the responsibility of understanding not only their cycles but also on the role it plays in their overall reproductive health.
One of the most important roles that feature in any woman’s life goes to sanitary towels. There exists so many products to date but the most commonly used and available are sanitary pads. What they look like, how to use them and how to effectively dispose them is a huge responsibility.
Notably, most people are unaware of the menstrual period experience. Whilst it differs from woman to woman, some effects include cravings, cramps, bloating, moodiness, acne among others. All these can sometimes put a toll on the woman’s mental health.
Furthermore, because of lack of proper knowledge on this, cultural beliefs and taboos, period stigma is one of the direct ways through which girls/women are suffering in silence and making detrimental reproductive health decisions.
Women’s health in terms of menstruation should be a normal life fact accepted by all members of the community. This is because vulnerable members of the community who are women/girls may not be able to access sanitary products, emotional support and even the knowledge on this vital education about menstruation and menstruation hygiene.
#WeAreCommitted to supporting women and girls all over the world. Menstruation is normal. Menstruation is a fact of life and we acknowledge the roles played by women and those that society as a whole should play in order to ensure that women and girls are empowered to be the best versions of themselves without fear of menstrual stigma.
This year, we will be supporting Cervical cancer patients and their teenage girls by providing sanitary products, counselling and donating items that they require as a way to mark the event.
